Times Tables
It is important that the children know their times tables off by heart to help them learn and master advanced strategies in maths. By the end of Year 4 they should know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables, but if they know more than these it will only be beneficial to them. Here are some websites with games that can be used to help practise these facts:

Nelson Museum Visit
Last Thursday we were lucky enough to visit the 'Roman Machines' display at the Nelson Museum. Room 6 won a free class entry thanks to Kate who entered us in a competition.
We heard about some machines from Roman times and how these machines even help us today. We also got to play with some models of the machines to see how they work. Here are some photos of us at the museum.

Bridge Opening
News reporters Justin and Jayda here at the bridge opening! Our helpers are Delta, Lucy, Connor and Jahzin.
On Friday the 21st of June Nayland Primary finally opened the Poorman's Stream Bridge that goes from the driveway by Otumarama to the Nayland Primary School Dental Clinic. Earlier in the morning the City Council blessed the bridge and we got to be the first ones to cross it. First we started by lining up and it took ages. It was like sitting on the Antarctic ground while waiting for the bridge to be introduced. But the mayor was there and we felt manahau! Then a man spoke and he was as old as time itself. He told us the bridge will be there for hundreds of years after we have passed away. It is going to be there for lots of people to get to school easier and faster. Laela cut the silky blue ribbon and we finally crossed.

Card Houses
Bang! Is it going to work? Don't stomp! Back away! Get behind the cones!
You have to hold your breath so you don't obliterate it. You have to be so, so careful and calm plus be light when putting the cards on top.
In room 6 we have been busy making card houses. Riria and Riley made a card house about 10 times the size of the Eiffel Tower. It was gigantic. When we were done we just added more stories but then bang! Riley made the wrong move and it tumbled down with horror. Riria said "no!!!!!" as it collapsed. She yelled at Riley as hard as she could. You could probably hear it from a mile away. After a while she got over it but it was disappointing.
Lots of other children have got excited about building card houses too and are getting better every morning.

Shared Lunch
Last Tuesday room 6 had a shared lunch. We came into the classroom and saw all the fabulous looking foods. It was happening because Jessica was leaving. Bo said "wow" and she was bursting to try the foods like a person who hasn't eaten in a week! Finally it was lunchtime. "We can eat all the food now," we said but Kate said "go outside and wait til Mr. Witty has got his big surprise." We wanted to know what it was. Kate called us back and we found out it was fish and chips. Room 6 were stomping like a stampede of elephants and were as loud as bees buzzing around the classroom. The food was so yummy that we couldn't stop eating it. When the class tasted the food they said "WOW THIS FOOD IS YUMMY."
