Cross Country at Nayland College

Tuesday 11th June

Today we went to Nayland College to do cross country. It was muddy and my shoes got muddy too. I came 11th in my race. I was in the 8 year old girls race. I yelled really loud when I was supporting the other runners in my house group.

Walking to Nayland College for the Run!

Cross Country at Nayland College

Tuesday 11th June

Today the whole of Nayland Primary went to Nayland College for cross country. We had to sit on some tarpaulins and they were a little wet. Most of the parents were there to support their child. Then the races kicked off with the five year old boys. Next was the five year old girls, then it was the six year old boys, then the six year old girls. Eventually it got to the seven and eight and nine year olds. That's the people in our class. Everyone tried really hard and we did great. Some of us like Riria even got first, second or third.

McKenzie in Christchurch

Hi my name is McKenzie. I had last week off school to go to Christchurch and I'm going to tell you about it. I went to Christchurch to have a check up and go to disney on ice. We first stayed in a hotel called 11am. Then we stayed in Ronald McDonald house. My family only felt one earthquake while we were there. My Aunty and Uncle live there and also my companion from Camp quality. Her name is Beck. She is coming to Nelson this weekend to see me, mum, dad, Lexi and Leo (my whole family). On Tuesday it rained, hailed and snowed and on the way back home we went through the Lewis. IT WAS SNOWING!!! We got to stop on the side of the road and play in it. While we were playing my brother giggled at the snow. My sister took photos of the snow as we drove along. We also had dirt all over our car. Along the road we saw some hawks and pigs. The best part was when my brother giggled at the snow.

Flight Week at Nayland Primary

For the first week back at school this term we have been learning all about flight. We're going to tell you all about it.

What have we been doing in writing to learn and share about flight?
In writing we have been writing facts about things that fly like rockets and hummingbirds.
And we are going to make some posters to show people what we have learned.
Justin

What have we been doing in the afternoons to learn about flight?
In the afternoons we have been swapping over classes to learn about flight. We have been making different things like paper airplanes, parachutes, masks and origami birds and butterflies.
In Room 6: we are making paper airplanes to learn about flight. We tested our planes to see how well they flew.

In Room 7: we made origami birds and butterflies. These are both things that fly.

In Room 8: we made parachutes and tested them on the playground and on the grass. We also watched a little movie about a boy and girl who were going parachuting for the first time. My parachute worked awesomely. It floated down slowly like it is supposed to.
Stephanie

What do we know about how airplanes work?
Airplanes glide through the air because the air helps then fly when it goes across their wings. If they didn't have air going across their wings they would go straight down.
Analise

What do we know about how hot air balloons work?
Hot air balloons go up with hot air but go down with cold air. Hot air balloons go up with hot air because hot air is light and they come down with cold air because cold air is heavy.
Ellie

What do we know about how parachutes work?
The air goes up under the parachute and the gravity is trying to push the person down fast. If it went down fast by gravity the person would be dead but the air going up helps it to come down slowly.
